Education technologies: how to make your project useful and engaging? Part.2 Big Data/AI
EdTech solutions are changing the traditional concept of education before our eyes. Students play games to reinforce the knowledge gained from textbooks on an emotional level. AI generates tasks and checks them, freeing up time for the teacher’s approach to each student. And we continue to talk about what technologies will become the drivers of the development of “education of the future” soon.
Using big data and machine learning. Since trainees in online courses perform their tasks virtually, the educational providers receive the work they have done in quite an impressive amount. Educational institutions will increasingly analyze this data in real-time, which experience shows to improve the quality of learning and allows students to see how successfully they have mastered the new material immediately. It will also enable online universities to tailor curricula to meet students’ needs better and provide better support. And teachers can see if a student is in the online class, how often he or she has attended the virtual classroom this week, and so on. All of this should help teachers assess the real progress of each student.
For example, a platform has been created for a university in the U.S. that aggregates all student assessments and finds problems with underachieving students. (They are usually expelled from universities most often.) Staff can work with them individually – for example, by offering a tutor or other assistance to a student. Within one semester, the number of students who move to the next course of study increased by 8 percent and the number of students who graduated by 16 percent.
Another area of application of large data is predictive modeling. American colleges and universities themselves send letters of request to prospective students, inviting them to enroll in an educational institution based on analysis of ethnic data, academic performance data, etc.
More artificial intelligence. Predictions say that artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool for working in the classroom will remain a top priority for advanced educational institutions, platforms, and teachers. The use of AI in the school may increase by almost 50% over the next three years.
There are many advantages to using AI: as a tool, it is fast and effective, it allows for individualized learning with real-time feedback, it can be characterful and fun. There are many applications and programs based on artificial intelligence that can help students better understand and apply concepts in the areas required for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics).
For example, Artificial Intelligence will be increasingly used to answer students’ questions, provide pre-examination counseling, help clarify misunderstandings, and take exams. It is possible to make a more objective assessment of knowledge: not to choose from answer choices, but to allow answering by voice. The answer will be processed and interpreted into a record. When a student needs to select from a list of options, they can answer at random, and when they need to give a specific answer themselves, they will have to remember it. Therefore, educational institutions will move from multiple choices to AI, which will actively involve the brain. Adaptive learning will ensure that each student is treated as a unique individual. For example, an AI will know what words a student has forgotten after a vacation. Teaching physics not linearly on topics, but separate detailed objects will be created in which each student will independently navigate on topics.
When used correctly, technologies can lead to a real educational breakthrough and simplify time-consuming processes (e.g., lesson planning, reporting, etc.). The integration of multimedia, gamification, mobile applications, as well as various educational platforms helps to diversify the material and present it in new, most unexpected forms. The market already has excellent solutions for adults, children, tutors, and even schools. To be competitive in the market, you should stay up-to-date and offer cutting-edge technologies. As you can see, an example, the education field provides a lot of opportunities to integrate and use Artificial Intelligence and Big Data.
