Business Challenge

For years, BRIG relied on commercially available security sensor systems. However, by 2020, they recognized the limitations of off-the-shelf solutions. To better serve their clients, they decided to develop a custom security system that would enhance incident detection and response.

The primary objective was to create a device that would seamlessly integrate with their centralized security system, ensuring real-time data processing, accurate incident detection, and immediate communication with the control center.

Solution

Hardware Development

The B-1 security device acts as the central unit for collecting signals from connected security and fire sensors. It continuously monitors events such as door openings, glass breakage, and movement by detecting deviations in loop resistance. When an event occurs, the device registers the change and triggers the appropriate response.

In the event of an alert, the device activates an alarm and transmits data via GSM to the central server, which forwards this information to the dispatcher’s control panel for a rapid response. 

This custom-built hardware enhances alert speed and accuracy, providing greater control over monitoring compared to commercial systems.

Software Development

Itera Research team also developed a robust software to integrate seamlessly with the B-1 hardware and manage communication with the central dispatch system. Key features included:

1. Event Detection and Reporting: The software analyzes incoming signals from connected sensors, classifying them based on programmed significance (e.g., alarm vs. non-alarm events). Critical events trigger immediate alarms and data transmission to the server.
2. Direct TCP Communication: Utilizing direct Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections minimizes communication latency, allowing alarm signals to reach the dispatcher’s display in real-time. This enhancement streamlines the system and reduces potential failure points, increasing the speed of response.
3. Integration with GSM Networks: The B-1 system incorporates Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) channels, ensuring reliable data transmission even during network disruptions. The device can transmit alerts through both wired and wireless connections, offering flexibility and reliability in diverse environments.

Team Performance Application

The project also included the development of a specialized application for BRIG’s management team. This app collects performance data from security personnel, such as response times and workload distribution. It optimizes team performance, ensures efficient task distribution during peak hours or emergencies, and minimizes burnout among response teams.

By providing actionable insights, this software module enhances the efficiency of BRIG’s entire security operation.

Results

With over 158 B-1 devices installed across various properties, BRIG experienced significant improvements in their security operations:
